Boxcar on iOS 5

Woohoo! Like everyone else, we were waiting with bated breath to see what Apple would come up with to change notifications in iOS 5. Let’s just say that that we’re very excited about the future of Boxcar and push messaging in general. For those of you who don’t know, or have been on vacation for a week. Here’s our quick take:
- Notification Center (screenshot above) - Allows you to swipe down from the top of the screen to see a grouped list of pending notifications. They’re shown with read/unread status and a clear all button per group. Tapping a notification opens the respective application. In Notification Settings you can choose which apps show up in the Notification Center and how many notifications get displayed.
- Lock Screen - If you have Notification Center on for a given app, you can also select whether those messages will show up on the Lock Screen. This allows you to have high priority messages show up even when your phone is locked. Very cool for figuring out what’s up at a glance. Swiping on a given message on the Lock Screen unlocks your phone and opens the message.
- Notification Style - You can now choose between 3 different Notification Styles - None, Banner, and Alert. Alert is the old pop-up style. Banner is a new variation that displays a small banner at the top of the screen, and None is none. (Note: We actually like getting SMS messages and similar messages that need action in the old style because they seem more actionable and immediate, while messages that are more informative work great in the new banner style.)
We’ve been using Boxcar with iOS 5 for about a week, and gathering feedback from lots of early adopters. We know there are some bugs, and we’re working on them.
At the end of the day, we love sending you the messages you want, and the better the operating systems are at displaying messages the better we like it. If you only knew what we have in store for the next version of Boxcar, you’d be just as excited as we are.
Love yah, and thanks for using Boxcar :)
